The Gorges of the Tarn is one of the most touristic natural places of France : in boat, in canoë, by foot, overhanging, or depply inside the valley
300 to 500 meters deep, They are linked to the "Méjean plateau" et the "Sauveterre one", through limestone cliffs. This area is a registered as a worldwide natural site since 1985.
Located in the north of the Languedoc plain, the region of the plateau and Gorges form geological group which is quite high enven if 170 millions years ago, the Gorges was below the see level. that's the reason ti s mostly composed of sediment rock : limestone, sensitive to the erosion et particularly, the one cause by the water.
Tarn, Jonte and Dourbie river have ont dug narrow valley to seperate the north and the south in 4 huge plateau : Sauveterre, Méjean, Causse Noir and Larzac.
Through the work of the water and the time, the landscape change suddenly from the hilly countryside and open spaces to the dizzier and closer space.. high limestone towers in corniche, are as much fortresses as for a diversified fauna.
This region benefits and suffers from various climatic influence : ocean, mediterranean and continental. The climate and the diversified environment give to the Gorges of ther tarn region, a land of discovery where contrast and diversity are the key words. |
